Biography:

When she was sworn into office on December 2, 2024, Monica Gordon became the youngest woman and just the third African American to serve as the Clerk of Cook County, one of the largest consolidated Clerk’s offices in the nation. As Clerk, Ms. Gordon has many wide-ranging responsibilities, including serving as the Chief Election Authority for suburban Cook County, securing and administering Vital Records, and recording and maintaining land records and other official documents. Ms. Gordon also plays a crucial role in the property tax system, maintaining delinquent tax records, tax maps, and information regarding TIF Districts. She also functions as the Clerk of the Cook County Board, preparing board agendas, post-meeting reports, and official County Board records. The Clerk also operates a Veteran's Services Division, providing the free recording of veterans' DD-214 Military Discharge papers. A longtime resident of the Southland, Ms. Gordon served as Cook County Commissioner for the 5th District prior to her election as Clerk. She served as Vice Chair of the Cook County Board’s Transportation Committee and has been active on issues involving health care and violence prevention, working to put her stamp on the 5 th District by prioritizing the needs of residents with an emphasis on equity. Clerk Gordon has a long record of public service, having served as board chair of Prairie State Community College as well as Government Affairs Director for Chicago State University. She previously served as the Executive Director of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation, a statewide advocacy organization. In 2022, she was also elected the Democratic Committeeperson of Bloom Township. Ms. Gordon is an active member of the Illinois Democratic County Chairs Association Leadership Circle and Jassac Charitable Foundation Inc. She serves on the National Association of Counties’ Transportation Steering Committee as well as the Board of Directors for Girls 4 Science, and the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation. She previously was Treasurer for Illinois Democratic Women and is an Illinois Women in Leadership Fellow and Edgar Program Fellow. Ms. Gordon holds an MA in Communication & Training from Governors State University and a BA in Journalism from Northern Illinois University. She says her birth on Labor Day symbolizes her commitment to improving the lives of working people.
