Justice Michael B. Hyman

Justice Michael B. Hyman has served on the Appellate Court since 2013. Justice Mary Ann McMorrow appointed him to a countywide Circuit Court vacancy in 2006. Endorsed by the Democratic Party, he won election to the bench in 2008.

Because the appellate court has the final say on about 97% of all cases, who sits on the appellate court can have a tremendous impact on the day-to-day lives of the parties, which is why electing Justice Hyman is so consequential.

Justice Hyman has consistently received the highest rating from local bar associations. The Chicago Bar Association found him “Highly Qualified,” stating, “Justice Hyman is highly regarded for his knowledge of the law, integrity legal experience, work ethic, and excellent writing skills. Justice Hyman teaches other jurists and is dedicated to improving the justice system.” Other bar associations finding him “Highly Qualified” include the Illinois State Bar Association and the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois.

Justice Hyman has presided as president of the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois Judges Association, the Decalogue Society of Lawyers, and the American Society of Legal Writers. In addition, he has held numerous leadership positions in national, state, and local bar associations, and is a frequent lecturer and speaker. He currently serves on the Supreme Court’s Equality Committee, the Illinois Judicial Ethics Committee, and is vice chair of the Cook County Justice Advisory Council.

A proponent of elevating the public's confidence in the courts, Justice Hyman believes judges are servants of justice. He approaches every legal issue with an open-mind, free of bias, ideology, and preconceived notions, knowing that each decision impacts lives, and ultimately, the community.

He approaches the issues with the knowledge that every litigant – regardless of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, social status, or power –deserves his or her day in court. He speaks out about the importance of diversity and inclusion in our society. For him, fairness is his mantra, impartiality his mandate.

He believes that judges must carefully and properly balance constitutional protections with legislative criminal lawmaking. A review of his opinions indicates a progressive approach to issues, and the courage to question outdated precedents.

In 2014, he received the Chicago Bar’s prestigious John Paul Stevens Award, given annually to those who best exemplify a commitment to integrity and public service.

After graduating from Northwestern University School of Law, he served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois. Subsequently, Justice Hyman spent nearly three decades in private practice earning a reputation as an accomplished trial attorney. Leading Lawyer and Illinois Super Lawyer selected him as one of the best of Illinois lawyers.

Last year, the Supreme Court moved Justice Hyman from an assigned slot on the appellate court to an elected seat. None of his opponents have ever served on the appellate court.

Throughout this campaign, Justice Michael B. Hyman has been building a coalition of enthusiastic, diverse, and dedicated voters. He looks forward to your support as well.
