Judge Levander “Van” Smith, Jr.
Judge Levander “Van” Smith, Jr., was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court. Judge Smith currently is assigned to the County Department in Domestic Violence Court. Previously, he was assigned to the First Municipal District, Daley Center, hearing traffic court cases.
Judge Smith brings 26 years legal service to the bench, focusing most of his career fighting to protect children and families. He has been found qualified or recommended by all evaluating bar associations.
Judge Smith received his J.D., University of Kansas School of Law, 1991 and his B.S.B.A., Washington University, St. Louis, MO. Judge Levander Smith is active in the legal community as a Member of Illinois State Bar Association, Administrative Law Committee, 2016-2018, Member Lesbian & Gay Bar Association of Chicago, JEC Committee, 2016, Board of Directors, 2018, Cook County Bar Association, Chair of LGBTQ Section, 2016-2017, Board of Directors and the Chicago Bar Association.
Judge Smith is active in the community as food pantry volunteer, Lend-A-Hand Tutoring and as evaluator for High School Mock Trial Competition.
