John C. Griffin

John Griffin is a native of Chicago who was educated at St. Rita High School, the University of Notre Dame (with Honors) and the DePaul University College of Law (Cum Laude).

After practicing law in the private sector at Griffin & Gallagher for over 30 years, John was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to serve as a Cook County Circuit Court Judge. Subsequently nominated by Democratic Party voters to remainon the bench, John Griffin was elected to serve as a Judge of the Cook County Circuit Court in 2010. Initially utilizing his legal experience in property law to serve as an arbiter of mortgage lending disputes in the Chancery Division, John was promoted to the commercial section of the Law Division to oversee business litigation disputes and served as the Supervising Judge for his final five years on the Circuit Court. In March 2018, John Griffin was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Appellate Court and, after only one year of service, was selected by his peers to serve as the Presiding Judge of the First Division of the Appellate Court.

After a thorough evaluation of his 40 years of legal experience, judicial performance and personal character and temperament, the Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois Bar Association both announced that Judge John Griffin was “Highly Qualified” to continue serving on the Appellate Court – their highest rating. In addition to the support of his peers in the legal community, John Griffin’s dedication to his profession has garnered John support from over one dozen of the leaders of Chicago’s most prominent labor unions as well as the full endorsement of the Cook County Democratic Party.

An active member of the community throughout his life, John Griffin was elected as a Trustee of the Moraine Valley Community College Board of Trustees in 1985, serving as Chairman of the Board for his last three years. John is still an active member of the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago and served as a board member and President of Chicago Gaelic Park. John also served on an advisory council of St. Xavier University and as a volunteer for the South Suburban Housing Center.

John is married to Mary Ellen Scalzitti and has 3 children and 8 grandchildren.
